Bamboo Train: Battambang’s bamboo train is one of the world’s all-time unique rail journeys. From O Dambong, 3.7km east of Battambang’s old French bridge (Wat Kor Bridge), the train bumps 7km southeast to O Sra Lav along warped, misaligned rails and vertiginous bridges left by the French. The journey takes 20 minutes each way, with a 20-minute stop at O Sra Lav in between.
Each bamboo train – known in Khmer as a norry (nori) – consists of a 3m-long wooden frame, covered lengthwise with slats made of ultralight bamboo, that rest on two barbell-like bogies, the aft one connected by fan belts to a 6HP gasoline engine. Pile on 10 or 15 people, or up to three tonnes of rice, crank it up and you can cruise along at about 15km/h.
Kayaks can be rented from Green Orange Kayaks, part of FEDA, a local NGO who run a community centre in the village of Ksach Poy , 8km south of Battambang. Half-day, self-guided kayaking trips begin at Ksach Poy’s Green Orange Cafe. From there you paddle back to the city along the Sangker River. A guide (US$3) is optional. Booking ahead is highly recommended.
Nary Cooking Class: This popular cooking class includes a visit to the local market, a three-course menu and a keepsake recipe book. Courses start at 9am and 3.30pm, lasting about three hours, plus time to eat your creations. If you’re more interested in eating rather than cooking, their restaurant is open from 8am to 10pm.
Heng Chheng Crocodile Farm: There is a crocodile farm in Dam Spey Village, Slaket Commune, Battambang, and it is changed from the home back garden. The owner of the farm is Heng Chheng grandma who is Chaozhou people, and she can distinguish between each crocodile. The farm is freely opened for visitors to visit but does not have a sign, so it is best to ask local people to lead the way.
Circus Show: The Phare Ponleu Selpak NGO gives Cambodian children from disadvantaged families the opportunity to “access culture via different artistic activities” including music, drawing, drama, dance and circus. Offering traditional Cambodian circus performances and other show. Look for fliers around town.
